My first interaction with fire performing was while I was overseas in Fiji during my early childhood. I remember being captivated by it — watching for as long as possible — while comparing a fire staff to a flaming Darth Maul.

Fast forward over five years into my flow arts journey, I was presented with the opportunity to run the Te Ahi Ora programme as a lead tutor in the Waikato. I enjoyed teaching fire performance at multiple schools; mentoring and providing students with a creative outlet and platform for self expression was hugely rewarding.

I spent my school years highly athletic playing multiple sports, specialising in softball and football. I always enjoyed the camaraderie and teamwork involved. Upon entering adulthood, I relocated to Dunedin which is where I developed connections with people involved with fire and flow. Exploring fire performance gave me an outlet for physical expression that I had been lacking since stepping away from club sports.

Fire and flow has provided me with connections to a community I can create experiences with that both performers and spectators gain benefit from. Additionally, fire performance functions as an alternative way to retain my fitness and mobility after injuries from several years of working in the trade sector.
